Results of Hoopoe and Quail survey for year 2015

Survey on some farmland birds was also carried out in 2015 as a part of the project. Here are the result for Hoopoe and Quail.

Quail (Coturnix coturnix) is qualification species for Natura 2000 area Goričko. Until year 2015 monitoring for quail was not established. In the project monitoring methodology was prepared and first survey was carried out. On six transect (with 104 points) we registered 5 females and 16 males. The survey was carried out twice. Based on this survey results population size for SPA Goričko had been estimated. Population size in year 2015 was between 60-90 singing males. Based on this estimation we can conclude that quail has suffered great population decline since 1997.

Hoopoe (Upupa epops) is another qualification species for SPA Goričko and yet another species without established monitoring. Protocol for hoopoes monitoring was prepared as a part of the project. On nine plots 23 singing males was recorded. 10 active nests had been discovered by systemic checking of cavities and nest boxes and information from the locals . Results had shown that hoopoes often return in the same cavity or nest box where they nested in previous years.
